Overview
LG developed an adaptive eye and head tracking system for Hyundai and Kia’s premium vehicles, optimized from its advanced Mercedes-Benz HMI architecture for production deployment. The system accurately detects driver attention and state even when the face is partially covered or sunglasses are worn. When signs of fatigue or distraction are detected, it provides visual and audio cues to recommend rest or issue safety alerts, introducing an intelligent, human-centered layer to in-vehicle interaction. At the prototype stage, the recognition data was extended into simple interface responses, demonstrating the potential for adaptive, safety-focused interaction in future models.
Challenge
How might we bring Mercedes-Benz’s advanced eye and head tracking technology—originally designed for full-scale AI HMI—to a production-ready system tailored for Hyundai and Kia’s premium vehicles, maintaining accuracy and safety across real driving conditions?
Objective
Refine and adapt the proven Mercedes architecture into an AI-driven recognition system that detects driver attention and fatigue even with sunglasses or partial occlusion, provides visual and audio rest alerts, and explores HMI responsiveness using recognition data in the prototype phase.
Result
Evolved from the success of the Mercedes project, the system was first implemented in Kia’s K900 flagship and later expanded across Hyundai’s high-end lineup, demonstrating reliable performance, scalable integration, and safety-centered design suitable for mass production.
